I completed my Bachelors degree in Music at Colchester, Essex where I studied piano under Robert Bell. A module led by one of the UKs most respected avant-garde musicians, Chris Burn, introduced me to improvisation and awoke a spark that would ultimately turn into a love affair with jazz.
It was not long before I was performing regularly in venues across the South-East - working with singers and horn players and playing regularly in trios, quartets, and larger ensembles.
I also formed my own trio, 'BD3', which focused on playing original compostions fusing different musical styles under a broad jazz banner.
As well as my performing work, I also taught privately and in schools on behalf of Essex County Council. I set up and ran a 'rock school' at Charles Lucas Arts College and worked as a guest tutor with Colchester Jazz Co-operative.
After the best part of a decade in the south, I returned home to the North-West and took up a full time position with Roland (UK) Ltd. as an Area Manager within the Contemporary Keyboard division.
In 2009, I decided to return to a freelance career as I wanted more opportunities to play and teach music. I still work as a freelance demonstrator for Roland but am now also free to pursue my own musical interests.
I'm now teaching from my new studio in the heart of Liverpool City Centre and performing regularly in venues across the North West. I also write a popular blog on jazz which can be found at http://playjazz.blog.co.uk.
I have been playing piano and keyboards professionally for over 15 years.
I was a relatively late starter, only taking up the piano at the age of 14, but within the next four years, I had managed to reach the standard required to enter music college.
Whilst still at school, I was a founder member of a ten-piece soul band called 'Native Soul'. Before long, the band was regularly playing the clubs of the North West - my first professional experience.
